-       This will be enough for the largest size and extra for smaller sizes

  • 3 stitch holders
  • A yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge: 4 stitches per inch on size seven needles

Instructions

Using size 5 needles, cast on 48(56,64,72,80) stitches, spread evenly among four of your needles

Join and knit 1, purl 1 around, this is your ribbing for the waistband

Continue rib knit until 1.5(1.5,2,2,2.5) inches thick

Switch to size 7 needles and knit all stitches

Knit 3 rounds

Add a short row in for half of your stitches:  to do this knit across two needles until there are 2 needles left on the second needle, wrap the yarn around the second to last stitch and turn your work, transfer the stitch you wrapped the yarn around onto your right hand needle and purl back over the two needles worth of stitches until there are two stitches left on your left needle, wrap the yarn around the second to last stitch and turn your work, knit back across the two needles worth of stitches until you get to the second to last stitch on the second needle that you wrapped the yarn around last time, pick up the wrapped yarn and work it along with the stitch it is wrapped around, continue knitting around the rest of the stitches until you come to the other stitch you wrapped, pick up the yarn that is wrapped around this stitch and work it along with the stitch it was wrapped around, now you’ve finished your first short row.

Knit 3 more rounds

Repeat short row knitting, making sure that the short rows start and stop at the same place as previous short rows

Continue this pattern of alternating short rows with three rows of knitting until the combined length of the front and back measures 10(12,14,16,18) inches long from cast on edge

Now the half of your knitting with short rows is the back of your longies and the half without short rows is the front

Knit the stitches on your first needle to last two stitches, knit one, make one, knit one

Move to your second needle and knit one, make one, knit to end of needle

Repeat these two needles worth of knitting until you get back to the beginning of the next row

Knit one round

Knit first needle to last 3 stitches, knit one, make one, knit two

On second needle knit two, make one, knit to end of needle

Repeat last two needles worth of knitting to get to beginning of next round

Knit one round

Knit to last four stitches on first needle, knit one, make one, knit three

On second needle knit three, make one, knit to the end of needle

Repeat last two needles worth of knitting on third and fourth needles

Knit one round

Knit to last five stitches on first needle, knit one, make one, knit four

On second needle knit four, make one, knit to end of needle

Repeat last two needles worth of stitches on third and fourth needles

Knit one round

These last 8 rows made a gusset for the crotch of your longies

Separate your knitting by putting the 8 stitches that you made into your front gusset on a holder(these will be the front of your crotch, put the next 24(28,32,36,40) on another holder(these will be one leg), put the next eight stitches which are your back gusset that you made on a third holder

You will work the last 24(28,32,36,40) as your first leg

Separate these stitches among three needles and join at the crotch

Knit around until the leg is 6(7,8,9,11) inches long

Knit one purl one around for one round

Purl one knit one around for one round

Repeat these last two rows until you have added an additional inch to the length of your leg

Bind off loosely and secure end

Join yarn to the front edge of your other set of leg stitches and knit around

Join and knit until leg measures 6(7,8,9,11) inches long

Knit one purl one around for one round

Purl one knit one around for one round

Repeat these last two rows until you have added an additional inch to the length of your leg

Bind off loosely and secure end

With the right side of your work facing you while holding it upside down, join the yarn to the back of your knitting on the right side of your un-worked stitches

Use the kitchener stitch to graft the front and back crotch gusset stitches together

Weave in ends

Make a cord by knitting three stitches in the round, by braiding three pieces of yarn together, or by crocheting a chain, and weave your cord through the ribbing at the top of your longies

Lanolize and let your little one wear them!

Feel free to use this pattern to make longies for yourself, your friends, or to sell.  I only ask that you not sell the actual pattern.  Thank you and happy knitting!
